Every year, businesses across the UK, often dispose of surplus stock that still has plenty of life left in it. At Rexel and Denmans, we wanted to find a better way. Through our partnership with Recolight and Donate-a-Light, not-for-profit organisations that redistributes unused electrical products to charities and community organisations, we are turning potential waste into powerful community resources.
Impact:
Dundee: Supporting Essential Hospice Care
In Dundee, Rexel donated 26 pallets of unused fittings. These were installed into a hospice warehouse site completely free of charge. By handling the logistics of collection, installation, and delivery at no cost to the recipient, Donate-a-Light helped this vital community facility operate more safely and efficiently without the burden of sourcing new materials.
Bermondsey: Lighting Up the North West
Our Bermondsey branch recently followed suit with a donation valued at over £50,000. This contribution of 20 pallets is already making waves. At Willow Wood Hospice in Ashton-under-Lyne, 14 LED bollards have enhanced external spaces while saving 828 kgCO2e. Meanwhile, Buxton Speedway is being brought back to life with new LED battens, exit signage, and distribution boards, delivering a further 483 kgCO2e saving.
Why it matters:
For hospices and NGOs operating on tight budgets, donations like this make a real difference. Donate-a-Light's model is simple but powerful, keeping products in use, out of landfill, and in the hands of the people who need them most.
“’The hundreds of light fittings that Rexel have donated to Donate-a-Light have been very much appreciated by the end users that have benefited from them already and will be by those who will benefit in future. Having access to up-to-date modern lighting systems will transform the lighting experience and significantly cut the operating costs of every organisation that use the products, meaning that they can spend more of their money bringing their services to the people who need them most. Thank you, Rexel. And a big shout out to Recolight , whose part in facilitating the donations is also greatly appreciated.”
Adrian Willis, Membership Development Manager, Recolight
This is just one example of how Rexel and Denmans are working to reduce waste and support communities across the UK. By keeping products in use, we are proving that the circular economy isn’t just a concept, it’s a practical way to deliver real social impact.
