WEEE Policy
In the UK waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is regulated by WEEE Regulations 2006 SI No 3289 (as amended).
This legislation means that there are now systems in place, in the UK, to minimise the disposal of WEEE as
unsorted municipal waste and that achieve a high level of collection of WEEE for treatment recovery and
environmentally sound disposal.
The Regulations also mean that suppliers of new electrical and electronic equipment like retailers, distributors and distant sellers, (such as internet retailers), have to ensure that WEEE from private households can be returned to them free of charge on a like for like basis by household customers.
Under the WEEE Regulations, Rexel is classified as a distributor and we are obliged to provide the following information:
WEEE The "crossed out wheelie bin" symbol on electrical and electronic equipment indicates that it is classified as WEEE, meaning that when it is no longer usable it should not be treated as normal household waste.
The WEEE Regulations aim to minimise the amount of WEEE householders throw out with their general rubbish. By keeping WEEE separate from other waste it can be treated, the hazardous substances can be removed and a large amount of waste can be recycled rather than sent to landfill.
Rexel offer to take back any waste WEEE product for free, when a household customer purchases an equivalent item from any Rexel branch.
Our business customers can bring used lamps and tubes to any Rexel branch for disposal for free. We can take other WEEE items from business customers, but there is charge for doing so.
The wheelie bin symbol can also be seen on portable batteries and these too (but not lead/acid batteries) can be returned to Rexel branches for recycling. There is a battery collection box at every Rexel branch.
Our WEEE recycling and disposal partner, Recolight, offer a range of services, to help our business customers with WEEE disposal direct from their sites. For details of the services and their cost, please contact your local Rexel branch.
