How to check your Tyres

• 20p tread check - This can easily checked with the use of a 20p coin. Simply place a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when it is inserted, then your tread is above the legal limit.
• Check your Tyre pressure – You can find the manufacturers recommended pressures in your handbook or on the inside of the drivers door area. Many petrol stations have facilities to alter your pressure, simply remove the dust cap and adjust as required.
• Check Tyre Condition – To check the condition of the tyre visually inspect both the sidewalls and the tread for any minor cuts or bulges. Also run your hand around the back sidewall of each tyre to feel for any imperfections.

It is recommended to check your tyres at least once per month. If in doubt, seek expert advice and get a professional to check over your tyres and set your pressures.

What should you check?

• Lights – Make sure you have clear visibility and that others can see you. Ask someone at home or a neighbour to check your lights while you switch them on and off, both for the front and back of your van.
• Screen wash – Use your wash, to check the level, look under the bonnet. The reservoir will usually have an icon of a windscreen on it, check the level and top up if necessary.
• Wiper Blades – If your wipers are streaking, skipping or failing to clearly clean the screen, get them replaced!

What should you do?

• Plan your Route – Where possible, plan your route on open roads, where grit and other treatments are more likely, and beware of shaded areas of road and under bridges where ‘Black Ice’ forms easier.
• Drive Slowly – Reduce your speed, in especially snowy or icy conditions, it is recommended to at least half the normal road speed so you can determine your traction and safety.
• Double Distance – Always keep several car lengths between you and the vehicle in front. This gives ample time to slow down if they lose control of their vehicle.

Remember, slow and steady wins the race! In very bad Winter conditions, don’t drive unless you must.
